When faced with fear, I want to run. I want to hide. I want to pull the blankets over my head and hold my breath until it passes. I try to numb the sensation of fear; drown out its overwhelming voice.
But I can’t.
I turn and face the fear, greet it, look at it full in the face and say, “I know you are there.” This action alone affords tremendous relief. It quells that panicky, anxious feeling when we are trying to escape something that, deep down, we know we cannot. Facing up to it is its own kind of surrender. This is not defeat; this is the way we ask for help from something larger than ourselves. This is the way we disarm the fear: by first disarming ourselves.
I look into the face of fear and I see my own reflection staring back. She has worked hard to get my attention; she has gone to great lengths simply to be seen. She is me; my shadow, my hidden self, everything that exists in the realm of the unhealed.
I extend a hand to her. I speak words of forgiveness. I do not wish her to be anything other than she is. Her voice shouts the words mine could not form. She is the door to freedom.
We don’t want to look at what scares us. If we ignore it, we believe it will go away. What we must remember is that in facing a fear, we help the entire world to heal. The shadow parts of ourselves that we so fiercely protect exist in all of us. To forgive one is to forgive them all. To release ourselves is to release someone else, and to release someone else is to release ourselves.
Know that forgiveness is nothing more than a commitment to see only truth. We rise above illusion and see the innocent purity that exists in each of us and can never be destroyed, altered, or shaken.
When faced with fear, I smile. I know I have been given a gift: a chance to activate Love in the cells of my body and in the atoms of the entire Universe. This is no small feat, and there is nothing Love cannot do (or undo).
When faced with fear, we smile. Fear is a miracle in disguise, and we are Miracle Workers. This is our job, our destiny, our spiritual blueprint, our purpose and our function.
We were, quite literally, born to do this.
